Current dA etiquette?

so after many years of inactivity on this account, i started posting again sporadically in late 2015 and ive been increasingly more active here in the last few months and im not really sure what the customs regarding interaction are, now that im starting to get more activity in my notifications

waaaaaay back when it was customary to thank for faves and watches etc.  but i know a lot of people are irritated by that (i remember that being a big deal around 2008, where people would lose there shit over it because they interpreted it as shameless self promotion on their page, which like, i get it but COME ON, a lot of people are just trying to be friendly)

i also find it hard to come up with polite responses to comments like "wonderful work" or "i like the colors here" beyond simple thank yous which im sure clutter up everyone's inboxes, but also i dont want to come across as some aloof snob so im like, what do?

ive been thinking about just dropping pleasant comments or w/e on peoples front pages.  not necessarily 'Thank you for x" but just to acknowledge that i see them and appreciate them?  do you think that will fly here in 2018 deviantART or nah?
