Is this ... markers, I guess? (not watercolor?) But regardless - wow. The expression on the face is great. I think you have hit something right about the proportions of the eyes, because he seems childlike, and yet not quite a child. I like the squiggles suggesting chainmail texture on the arms and the little flyaway curls of hair.
(niggle: I would kind of expect another star to be above the seventh diamond right at the throat? iunno, just the tree seems a little incomplete without a seventh star, or something.)
